Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
AI vs. Traditional Programming
How hand-written rules differ from models that learn patterns from data.
In this lesson
The core idea
Conventional software combines developer-written rules with data to produce an output. In machine learning, developers provide data and example outcomes, and training produces a model that represents patterns in those examples.
Traditional programming
It fits problems with clear, stable rules, such as calculating tax from a published rate or validating an identification-number format. Its behavior is predictable because each result follows inspectable logic.
Machine learning
It fits problems whose complete rules are difficult to write, such as recognizing a cat or detecting the tone of a message. Instead of describing every possible case, a model learns from examples and is tested on unseen cases.
Practical comparison
Locking an account after five failed attempts is a conventional rule. Estimating fraud risk from device, location, and behavior is a machine-learning task. Real products often combine both: a model estimates risk and rules decide the action.
