How Machines Learn from Data
A simple journey from examples to training, evaluation, and model use.
In this lesson
Learning does not mean memorizing
Machine learning adjusts parameters inside a model so its outputs improve on examples. The real goal is not to repeat training data, but to discover patterns that generalize to new cases.
A simplified workflow
- Define the task and measurable outcome.
- Collect and clean data representing real conditions.
- Split data into training, validation, and test sets.
- Train by reducing the difference between predictions and correct outcomes.
- Evaluate on unseen data and monitor after deployment.
Example: classifying fruit
A model sees labeled images of apples and oranges and discovers relationships involving color, shape, and texture. For a new image it produces a probability for each class. Limited or biased training images may cause failure under different lighting or backgrounds.
Generalization and data quality
A useful model performs beyond the examples it learned. Representation, diversity, and correct labeling can matter more than choosing a complicated algorithm.
Check your understanding
- Why must test data remain separate from training data?
- Give two reasons a model could fail after deployment.
